Especially top 10 or to-do.
So this list of TOP DECORATING MISTAKES may me smile since it addressed some very common problems I face with my clients. A few of my favorites:
DO NOT paint before you select your furniture colors! It is much harder to pull together a room if you are limited to a specific paint color (which is again, why I almost always advocate for neutrals on the wall!).
DO NOT buy everything from one source! I can't tell you how many clients ask me to sign off on purchasing a complete room from Restoration Hardware or Room & Board. Variety is more than the spice of life. Which leads me to...
DO NOTE buy everything all at once! This is especially true when it comes to accessorizing and putting together the finishing touches. Anyone can purchase a sofa and chairs and a rug. It's the little details and the accessories and art that make a house of furniture feel like a home. I have been doing a lot of sourcing from Etsy, Ebay and local antique stores these days. I look for artifacts that are meaningful to my clients and that differentiate their rooms from a catalogue page. Maybe it's my auction house background, or maybe I am just tired of seeing the same items in each magazine or blog, but I feel a home's accessories should evolve and be cultivated over time. And did I say, be MEANINGFUL to its owners?
So whether you have a thing for globes, or birds, or seashells or vintage photography, add a little something personal into your decor. I guarantee you will bring more life into your rooms.
